What is CNC Manufacturing?

Automated, precise, efficient, and consistent custom metal manufacturing.

High-tech form of manufacturing for simple or complex parts

All CNC manufacturing involves cutting material from a block of solid material or sheet metal with some sort of spinning machine. CNC machining can be used to shape a wide range of metals, including aluminum, stainless steel, brass, copper, titanium, and steel alloys. It’s sort of the opposite of 3D printing, which builds up a material like plastic to form the desired shape.

The term “computer numeric control” (CNC) refers to a broad range of modern manufacturing techniques that use various types of computer-operated mills, lathes,  and saws to carve custom shapes from a solid block of metal or from sheet metal.

This high-tech form of manufacturing creates parts and components that would usually be impossible to create manually in large quantities. CNC machining is used to produce parts that are small or large, simple or complex.

A blend of craftsmanship and technology

By “computer-operated,” we mean that a human is not physically handling the tools or the material during the carving process. This helps eliminate the possibility of human error or injury.

All of the actions are pre-programmed into the computer by talented product designers and skilled CNC operators. These highly trained workers create detailed computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) files and computer-aided design (CAD) files that guide every step of production.

These automated processes operate with an extremely high level of precision, speed, and accuracy. It is also safer for workers and creates less waste – creating a more ethical and sustainable manufacturing work environment.

Delivering high-quality, dependable results

CNC manufacturing is much more reliable and consistent than manual production. Each CNC machine in our shop produces your parts the exact same way, every single time.

Quality control is also easier with CNC machining. Humans and computer systems work together to conduct measurements and tests throughout the entire process to ensure the finished products meet our strict quality standards.

Scalable contract manufacturing that grows with your business

CNC manufacturing is super adaptable.

If you want to change your product design, it’s no problem. All we have to do is update the programming. We can also duplicate your design to quickly create additional sizes and variations to meet your needs.

No matter how many SKUs you have, we can achieve uniformity across each batch of components.

What types of materials does Superior Process Solutions machine?

We machine custom creations for every client, so we work with the materials that offer them the best value. Because of our multi-industry experience, we’ve turned, milled, and deburred almost every material under the sun, from steel alloys to titanium to industrial plastics. When you tell us about your project and end-use needs, we can help make material recommendations.

How does CNC manufacturing work?

CNC Milling Services:

CNC milling removes material by pressing a spinning cutting tool against the material surface. The tool moves around (up and down and side to side) to create the desired shape.

The tool can also change its angle (axis) and depth to create more complex shapes. A CNC milling machine will gradually chip away at the material to create the desired shape. As the process goes on, it becomes more accurate and precise.

Finished products meet the design specifications with extreme precision. Superior Process Solutions can even achieve tolerances as tight as ±.0002″.

CNC Lathes & Turning Centers:

While CNC milling involves a spinning tool that drills and grinds against a stationary piece of material, CNC lathes and turning centers keep the tool stationary and spin the material to be shaped.

CNC lathes & turning machines can perform a multitude of operations, including:

  • Shaping
  • Sanding
  • Drilling
  • Boring
  • Threading
  • Knurling
  • Reaming
  • Tapering

CNC Metal Sawing Services:

Metal bars can be cut into long sections or even thin disks through an efficient automated system. CNC metal sawing services offer precision and cost savings, with minimal scrap compared to traditional band sawing methods.

Our metal sawing services accommodate materials ranging from 1 inch to 6 ¼ inches in diameter (round or square bars) with high precision and an excellent finish.
